About Josie McKinney
Josie is a Mi’kmaw and Wolastoqiyik leader, lawyer, and educator.
With nearly 20 years of experience in litigation - 13 of those years as a criminal prosecutor - Josie understands how to handle sensitive matters ranging from violence and fraud, to systemic discrimination, governance failures, and institutional risk. As Nova Scotia’s first dedicated human trafficking prosecutor, she managed highest complexity cases involving power imbalances and vulnerable individuals, while regularly assessing evidence and credibility, and ensuring procedural fairness.
During her time as Acting Executive Director of the Nova Scotia Status of Women Office, Josie managed issues with significant legal, reputational, and human impact. She advised at a senior level across government on pressing issues, including gender-based violence.
A central focus of Josie’s work has also been workplace and institutional equity. She has co-led equity-based advisory committees for large legal institutions, authored landmark policies, and designed cultural competency frameworks for hiring, evaluation, and case consultation. This work required careful analysis of systemic issues and the ability to translate findings into clear, defensible recommendations for leadership.
In 2022, Josie received the Award for Mi’kmaq and Indigenous Excellence in the Legal Profession
Josie brings credibility, discretion, and sound judgement to her work, helping organizations respond to concerns with integrity, clarity, and confidence.
